Is there any better smell than fresh banana bread baking in the oven?
Now, imagine that classic comforting aroma infused with the rich, toasty notes of browned butter. It takes classic banana bread to a new level—deep, nutty, and incredibly flavorful.
But this isn’t just any banana bread. My version is made with less added sugar and butter than traditional recipes, making it a healthier option without sacrificing flavor or texture. The natural sweetness of ripe bananas shines through, while a sprinkle of flaxseeds adds a boost of Omega-3s and fiber.
And for the perfect finishing touch? Crunchy walnuts and dark chocolate chips. The combination of textures—soft, tender banana bread with bits of crunch and gooey chocolate—is simply unbeatable.
Whether you enjoy it fresh out of the oven with a spread of butter or toasted up the next day, this brown butter banana bread is a must-try. Let’s get baking!

Brown Butter Banana Bread
Banana bread gets an upgrade with browned butter, walnuts & chocolate chips. Healthier with less added sugar & butter without compromising flavor or texture!

Ingredients
Directions
-
Preheat oven to 350 F. Prepare a 9 inch loaf pan by lining with parchment paper (my preference) or lightly greasing with butter/oil/oil spray.
-
Add the 1 stick / 1/2 cup of butter to a skillet on medium heat. Stir continuously until golden brown, about 5-10 minutes. Turn off heat once golden, and keep stirring until butter turns deep brown. It can burn quickly so keep your eye on it! Pour into a large bowl.
-
Add the 1/2 cup brown sugar to your browned butter in a large bowl. Let cool for a few minutes. In the meantime, mash your bananas.
-
Add 1 egg, 2 tsp vanilla, 3 tbsp ground flaxseeds, and 3 large mashed bananas to butter and sugar mixture and mix well.
-
Next add in 1 1/2 cups flour, 1 1/2 tsp baking soda, 1 tsp cinnamon, and 1/2 tsp salt. Stir until almost combined but still has streaks of flour.
-
Stir in 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips and 1/2 cup chopped walnuts. Try not to overmix.
-
Pour batter into loaf pan and sprinkle with more chocolate chips and walnuts as desired. Bake for 40-45 mins at 350 F, until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool for about 15 minutes before digging in - if you can wait that long!
Notes
Use whatever type of chocolate chips you like. I love to use dark chocolate chips, but mini chocolate chips are also great for better distribution!
